Last week, I went on an adventure in Australia for a week. After yearning for such adventures for a awhile, I decided to go to Uluru at the center of Australia but in order to go there, I had to transit a plane from Sydney so I decided to stay in Sydney for a few days. Drive around town I don’t usually like to travel in cities because I came from Bangkok, and it is crowded as hell already, but Sydney is a much easygoing city than I expected.

Thanks to my friends Pac and Nat who drove me around and allowed me to see how people live around the city. I then went to this very hip, very party-environment hostel called the Hostel Wake Up! They have a great club down in the basement with activities like Speed Dating and Trivial Night every Friday. It was new and was an interesting and refreshing experience. I met so many fun people during my 2 nights stay there. After that I walked down to The Rocks There is a market during the weekends , stopped for a Kebab, while observing the locals near the Circular Quay.

Saying Goodbye Leaving this place is hard because after a few days, you are just starting to get used to the lifestyle but that’s how travel works, we bond and we leave. The thing I missed most about this place is the outdoor cafe culture that you will see everywhere in the city. There are many cool cafe almost every blocks I’ve seen.

But passengers have to pay more to use the super-fast trains, operated by the Southeastern train company, than those using the ‘normal’ services. China Chinese scientists have developed a successful panda breeding program and it involves showing the animals exactly how to do it. There are about pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, in southern China, and up close and personal there is no doubt about it — they are adorable, cute and cuddly. But they no longer hold the key to their own survival.

After all the years since last travelling on the train between Sydney and Perth I’m eager to see what, if anything has changed. I’m perversely pleased to discover that, apart from the crew, I’m still one of the youngest passengers on the train. Since I last journeyed on the Indian Pacific, airline-style classes have been introduced.

I’ve been granted a berth in the train’s Platinum Class, which gives me access to an exclusive lounge and dining car which comes with a fully-stocked, partially self-service bar and espresso machine but you still get a knock on your compartment door each morning from the room attendant to deliver the traditional cuppa. Back when I wrote Ribbons of Steel, there wasn’t anything espresso about the Indian Pacific – coffee and track speed included — with staff wearing crisp white shirts and natty black bow ties, even out in the middle of the Nullarbor when refilling the Indian Pacific’s water-tanks.

It’s all a lot less formal now and it’s also a much better, more contemporary train, even if it is as slow as ever with an average speed of 85 kilometres an hour. Then again, with a host of comforts, stunning scenery, fine food, wine and coffee, and a self enforced “e-tox” along much the way, what’s the rush? Advertisement Sit back and savour it, for goodness sake, I say.

The idea is the result of a desire to design and create the most efficient drivetrain possible. After partnering with the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado, CeramicSpeed created a drive shaft concept that completely eliminated the need for derailleurs and chains. Instead, the drive shaft uses 21 CeramicSpeed Bearings. As the cyclist pedals, he turns the pinion style drive shaft system, which includes the bearings.

Those bearings transfer the torque from the front ring through the drive shaft and onto the speed rear cog, causing the wheel to turn. In traditional chain set ups, there are eight points of sliding friction that increase the workload.

Australia On a routine tram ride into work this morning, a mother with a double pram tries to squeeze past suit-clad commuters with their heads buried in smartphones. She has no luck. A man in his 40s sits comfortably sprawled across two seats and takes no notice of her — and she is now exasperated. This man is guilty of “manspreading”, a term used to describe the habit some men exhibit of selfishly taking up more space on public transportation than they need.

This includes opening their legs and impinging on adjacent seats, and sometimes taking up two or more seats. The behaviour is frequently called out by angry social media users, who argue men should be more considerate of women travellers. But a new study has found that, far from being a turn-off, some people find manspreading an attractive trait.

Manspreading in action The problem is so pervasive that manspreading is considered a crime in busy New York City. Yes, a report on the New York Police Department’s attitudes towards race and class last year revealed two men were arrested for “manspreading” on the subway, “presumably because they were taking up more than one seat and therefore inconveniencing other riders”. Man sits right next to me with his huge bag and newspaper and proceeds to occupy most of the seat But manspreading is also an issue in Australia, with frustrated commuters regularly documenting their experiences with the phenomenon on crowded trains, trams and buses.

There is also a Facebook group dedicated to “outing” manspreaders, where members post pictures of and poke fun at those who are encroaching on the personal space of others on public transport. Spread the love, study finds For some commuters, however, manspreading might not arouse anger so much as romantic interest. A new study published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found men and women who adopted “expansive postures” in speed dating scenarios were deemed more attractive by members of the opposite sex.

Manspreading Melbourne For the two-part study, Tanya Vacharkulksemsuk, a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, and her research team used video footage from a speed-dating event that showed men and women who exhibited more expansive body language – for example, outstretched limbs – were more likely to get follow-up dates.
